CHARLOTTE — The very first female bus driver with CATS is celebrating her 90th birthday. Family and friends held a special drive-up birthday party for Blandina Gray in North Charlotte.
Gray first drove a bus for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools then became CATS’ first female bus driver in 1975. She says she didn’t think she was breaking down barriers in the moment, but she’s proud of what she’s accomplished.
“If it’s on their mind to do whatever they want to do, just ask the Lord to be with them. Just keep on praying about it, and it’ll come through,” says Gray.
Gray retired from driving 28 years ago. Today, nearly half of Charlotte’s bus drivers are women.
