CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is in custody after shooting at officers following a brawl at a nightclub in Charlotte early Saturday morning, according to CMPD.

Officers responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. to the nightclub on North Caldwell Street in reference to a physical assault that took place.

While investigating the incident, police say several fights started in a parking lot next to the nightclub on North Brevard Street.

While officers were breaking up the fighting, a man, later identified as Tyler Drew, 26, retrieved a rifle.

Drew fired several shots directly at officers, but fortunately no officers were struck and no officers discharged their weapons, according to a news release.

As officers split up to take cover and address the shooter, one of the officers was able to tackle the suspect and take him into custody without further incident.

After detectives interviewed Drew, he was taken into custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Officer and charged with six counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer and Possession Of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
