BURLINGTON, N.C. — A 36-year-old Elon man was arrested and charged for stealing copper from a local Church on Tuesday morning.
Deputies say Robert Jeffers was identified as the suspect and charged with felony injury to property to obtain nonferrous metals (copper) and misdemeanor to building/church by cutting copper gas line for his involvement in the following case.
On Tuesday, February 8th, deputies responded to a call regarding a suspicious person on Pollard Avenue and Melrose Drive in Burlington.
Deputies say at the scene, the caller informed them that they witnessed a person at Zion Church and that there had been damage to the church’s wiring and a cut gas line.
After more deputies arrived at the Church, the witness told police that the suspect was a man wearing a red hoodie, gray jeans, and a black cap with a bookbag.
The witness says they saw him walking around the church and he appeared to be tampering with the power meter.
Police say the description of the suspect given matched Robert Jeffers, 36, of Elon.
With a witness statement and discovery of evidence, deputies arrested Jeffers.
Jeffers is now in custody of the Alamance County Detention Center under a $5,000 bond.
Damage to the gas line and electrical wires was estimated to be $5,000, according to a news release.
