LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A man was seriously injured Monday evening after he was shot while driving in Kershaw, South Carolina, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to East Richland Street around 6 p.m. where they found a 27-year-old victim in a 2015 Ford Escape with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Deputies removed the victim from the car and began administering rendered aid until medic arrived. The victim was flown to a medical facility for further treatment and is currently in critical condition.
Through an initial investigation, detectives believe that the victim was driving the Escape on East Richland Street and was struck by a gunshot fired into the car. The car slowly drove off the left side of the street and traveled a significant distance through open ground before gently coming to rest against the side of a house. There was no significant damage to the house.
Investigators have developed leads in the case, but no arrest has been made.
“A large crowd of people gathered near where the victim was found, and we talked with many of them. This is a pretty heavily populated area with lots of folks out and about,” Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile. “This shooting occurred before dark, and we suspect there were people out there who saw what happened and know who did it. I encourage anyone with information about the shooting or activities on East Richland Street or elsewhere around Kershaw leading up to the shooting to call us. You may report information anonymously.”
The investigation is active and ongoing.
