CHARLOTTE, N.C. – New evidence that social media can be as addictive as drugs. And the algorithms that create personalized content for us on our social media pages is making it worse. And it’s the absolute worst for kids.

A recent Chinese study published in the journal Neurolmage looked at China’s version of TikTok’s effect on the brain. The Wall Street Journal reports that brain scans of college students found areas dealing with addiction were highly activated when the students watched personalized videos, like the ones on your “TikTok for you” page.

Part of the issue is quick hit after quit hit of dopamine, and a primal urge to keep that happy feeling.

Emerging research also shows the short, fast-paced videos makes it harder to focus on activities without instant gratification.

Our question of the night: has your attention span gotten shorter?
