MATTHEWS, N.C. — The Matthews Police Department is investigating a threat at Butler High School in Matthews after receiving a tip.

The police department received an anonymous tip Wednesday afternoon stating that an unknown student was planning on harming other students at the high school on Thursday.

Detectives with the Matthews Police Department were assigned to investigate this threat. The police department worked throughout the night to conduct an extensive and thorough threat assessment to determine the validity of this threat as well as to identify the responsible party for making it.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.

“As in any threat to the safety of our public, in coordination with CMS officials and CMS Police, significant safety measures were implemented which included additional Matthews Police staff assigned to the inside and outside of Butler High School,” the police department said in a news release. “This joint effort is to ensure that an appropriate response is made to this threat for the continued safety of Butler High School students and staff.”
